Chi Straighteners

They say that sometimes, the best gifts are the ones you give to yourself and I proved it with my Chi straightener.

First of all, let me state that I have the best, kindest, most loving boyfriend in the world. He's considerate and is always thinking ahead but his one and only drawback is that he is the really bad at shopping for gifts!

Of course, I knew this when I met him. We were a part of a circle of friends, and he had the reputation for being the person you never wanted to get in a holiday exchange. Whenever a birthday came around, the talk was all about what crazy gift my boyfriend would give. But when we started dating, I thought all that would change. Silly me!

We had our first date right after Christmas, so the first holiday we shared was Valentine's Day. I spent days thinking about what gift I could give my boyfriend. I bought specialty chocolates and somehow got hold of a baseball autographed by his favorite player (he's a sports fanatic). I couldn't wait to see what he had gotten me. On the "big day", we sat down and exchanged gifts. I gave him his baseball and chocolates and he handed me a card.

I wondered what would be inside. In the back of my mind I was envisioning a juicy love poem or a gift certificate to a luxury spa. I opened the card and inside I found...a check.

Yes, a check- made out to cash.

Let me just state right here that we almost broke up on the spot. My boyfriend pleaded with me, saying, "You know how bad I am at giving gifts. I just didn't want to mess this up. It's our first holiday together." I understood but I was still miserable. I mean it was Valentine's Day, after all...supposedly the most romantic holiday of the year.

I called my best girlfriend the next day in tears. She consoled me for half an hour, but got practical. "As long as you have the money, you might as well spend it," she said. "A gift is a gift. What have you been meaning to buy?"

"I don't know," I sniffled. "I guess I've had my eye on a Chi straightener for a while." I had, ever since my hair stylist had used a Chi straightener on my somewhat wiry hair and had created an amazingly sleek look. But I'd put the thought in the back of my mind, figuring a high-end hair straightener would be too expensive for my budget.

"I'll be right over to help you shop," my friend said. She's what I like to call a Super Shopper as she can find the best products at the lowest prices anywhere, any time.

We spent that afternoon at my computer, searching for Chi straighteners online. I knew what kind my hairdresser had used and was disappointed to discover that it was, after all, beyond my budget, even with my "Valentine's Day gift" taking some of the strain off my wallet.

"We can't give up yet," my friend insisted and that was when we landed at www.my-hair-tools.com. "Check this out," my friend said. "There are testimonials and there's a place where you can ask questions." We had a ball on the site as there was even a section with video tutorials of different hairstyles.

But the most surprising part was that www.my-hair-tools.com was offering my dream hair straightener for thirty dollars less than the lowest price we'd found on other sites!

"No way," I said, and my friend and I looked at other hair products to confirm we weren't crazy. Just like the Chi straightener, the other hair tools were for the most part discounted, sometimes very much so. I was thrilled so, for that matter, was my friend. "I'm going to do some shopping myself when I get home," she said.

Over the next couple of weeks, while I waited for my Valentine's Day gift to come, my disappointment with my boyfriend began to subside, and by the time my Chi straightener arrived, things were great between us again. My boyfriend knew he was fully forgiven when I showed up for a Saturday night date in a hot dress and a sleek new straightened 'do.

"Happy late Valentine's Day," I joked.

He loved it. "Next year," he promised, "it will be a gift certificate to a great spa, I promise."

"Okay," I said, "but let me pick the spa," and we both laughed.
